Vision
Fiscally sponsored by the Crimsonbridge Foundation, VIDA Alliance seeks to build a collaborative funding model for advancing maternal and infant health research. As a new initiative, the VIDA Alliance plans to operate as a research funder and convener, prioritizing evidence-based inquiry, partnership with academic institutions, and translation of research findings to inform clinical care, provider education, and patient understanding.
Our Path Forward

Year 1-2
Fund a proof of concept study and convene scientists working on mastitis.

Year 2-4
Disseminate findings and support partners in maternal and infant health research.

Year 5-8
Create a center for stakeholders to collectively fund new and ongoing maternal infant health research
Research Priorities
Mastitis is our first research focus

Why Mastitis?
-
Common: 1 in 3 breastfeeding women develop mastitis
-
Preventable: Antibiotics are the go-to “cure” yet many cases are not caused by bacterial infections.
-
Understudied: No clinical data informs existing treatment guidelines
Mastitis affects the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of both mother and baby
-
Can prematurely end a mother’s breastfeeding journey
-
Over-treatment can disrupt the microbiome of both mother and baby.
-
Under-treatment can lead to serious complications and misdiagnosis such as abscess formation and sepsis.
Families deserve better guidelines to receive the most appropriate care when they need it the most.
